Centre Helps 4 Key Program Areas

#1 24-Hour Hotline

  • Staffed 24/7/365 by skilled, compassionate volunteers 
  • Answering after-hours phone calls for Women’s Resource Center and Crossroads Counseling
  • Answering Alcoholics Anonymous telephones
  • Emergency food pantry on site and referrals to State College Food Bank 
  • Referrals to other agencies and service providers, including 400+ Centre County helping programs
  • Crisis intervention, short-term emotional support, information, referral services
  • Referral to Basic Needs Case Management program
  • Emergency transportation and shelter to eligible clients

#2 Basic Needs Case Management

  • Case managers provide counseling, emotional support, advocacy, education, financial packaging, budget counseling, and resource identification.
  • Food, housing, utilities, transportation
  • Help developing a viable plan in order to reach a sustainable living situation
  • Help identifying programs and services that clients may be eligible for
  • Walk-in services from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday–Friday, at 410 S. Fraser Street, State College, PA 16801

#3 Educational Programming

Youthful Offenders Program (YOP)

  • In partnership with State College Police Department, an alternative educational adjudication program for youth cited for violating alcohol laws.
  • YOP strives to equip participants with the skills necessary to navigate a culture where a party atmosphere is often the norm.
  • The curriculum includes discussion with peer speakers who are members of the Collegiate Recovery Community and/or Alcoholics Anonymous, as well as representatives from the State College Police Department.

Parents of Addicted Children Come Together (PACCT)

A group of parents that meets once a week for two hours over four weeks to provide immediate, empathic support and concrete solutions to those seeking support, information, or referrals.

#4 Volunteer Training

  • Utilized annually by 30–40 Penn State students and community members.
  • Volunteers complete 180 hours of Hotline Training, successfully complete a probationary period, then fulfill a 340 hour commitment to staffing the agency. They receive training on how to handle difficult situations, including crisis intervention, suicidal ideation, substance abuse, grief and loss, and more.
  • Comprehensive, real-world, hands-on training for Penn State students and other volunteers. Many volunteers pursue careers in social work, law enforcement, and education, giving back to their communities. Volunteers are more prepared for their careers by learning/practicing skills in crisis intervention, deescalating, listening, short-term counseling, etc.
  • CHC recruits, trains, supervises, and evaluates volunteer long-term Hotline Staff, Administrative Interns, and short-term volunteers completing community service.
